Michael's Book Babble

I'm an indie author and a scribbler of inane babble. I talk about books I've read/liked. Or at least, that's the plan.

Most of the reviews will be considered "mini-reviews." Usually, it's mostly my reaction to what I've been reading. There are people who are far better at doing full and helpful reviews. But I still have fun doing them, and hope you enjoy them!

Another flawless masterpiece

Cold Spring Harbor - Richard Yates

Cold Spring Harbor may seem like a short novel (a little less than 200 pages long), but don't let that fool you. It's packed with so much story. More so than even some of the longest novels out there, if that makes any sense. That's because Yates is a master at creating gripping stories about ordinary people trying to get by.

This is another tragic (yes, I'm using that word again) story where two families meet by chance. And when the families are combined, all of the cracks in the foundation are slowly revealed. Evan struggles to be a thoughtful husband (this is his second marriage), and Rachel doesn't know how much longer she can take her overbearing mother. And it doesn't help that they all live in the same house, right in Cold Spring Harbor.

Yates is at his best once again. I rank this right up there with The Easter Parade. If you enjoy slice-of-life fiction that doesn't always have a happy ending, then I highly recommend it. It's a quick read, but the novel will stay with you long after you've finished.
