Michael's Book Babble

I'm an indie author and a scribbler of inane babble. I talk about books I've read/liked. Or at least, that's the plan.

Most of the reviews will be considered "mini-reviews." Usually, it's mostly my reaction to what I've been reading. There are people who are far better at doing full and helpful reviews. But I still have fun doing them, and hope you enjoy them!

Truly unsettling. And brilliantly executed.

Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov

I've always wanted to read Lolita. Don't know why it took me so long. I actually bought the audiobook which is narrated by the one and only Jeremy Irons. And man... what a story. It is by no means an easy read or story to take. The narrator of this tragic and doomed tale is indeed sick and perverse, yet Nabokov writes him as a real, living breathing person. It'd be easy to write him as a heartless monster with no feelings whatsoever. Nabokov does not take that road, which makes this even more of a dark and uneasy read. But masterfully executed.

If you have not heard the audiobook, I highly recommend it. Jeremy Irons is great. There are certain parts where the narrator seems to be going off on random thoughts, sort of like he's thinking aloud. During those parts, Irons mumbles in a way that makes it sound like he really is thinking aloud in character.
