Michael's Book Babble

I'm an indie author and a scribbler of inane babble. I talk about books I've read/liked. Or at least, that's the plan.

Most of the reviews will be considered "mini-reviews." Usually, it's mostly my reaction to what I've been reading. There are people who are far better at doing full and helpful reviews. But I still have fun doing them, and hope you enjoy them!

Revisiting "I Dream of Zenia with the Bright Red Teeth"

Stone Mattress: Nine Tales - Margaret Atwood

After finishing The Robber Bride, I decided to revisit her short story, "I Dream of Zenia with the Bright Red Teeth," which is in her latest (and excellent) collection.

At the time, I didn't realize that this story was actually somewhat of a sequel, or should I say "follow-up" to one of her novels, The Robber Bride. Even though I thought the story stood well on its own, I didn't fully appreciate it since I hadn't read the novel first.

Now after reading the novel, the short story is a million times better, and it was already a good story to begin with. But now I love it even more.

It was fun to revisit Tony, Roz, Charis, and...

*gasp*

Zenia???

P.S. Even though the story does stand well on its own, should you decide to read this collection (and you really should) and you haven't read The Robber Bride, skip that story if you can and save it for when you finish the novel. Or at the very least, read the novel, and then read the short story all over again if you read it beforehand. Trust me, you'll enjoy it that much more.
